    SUFFOLK, Va. -- A sign warns people of the danger at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot  became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     First FNOD meeting of 2016 scheduled

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host their quarterly public meeting regarding restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot Thursday.

    Budget, USACE Work Plan provide $64 million for Virginia efforts

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Tuesday delivered to Congress its Fiscal Year 2016 (FY 2016) work plan for the Army Civil Works program just hours after the president released his proposed FY 17 budget. The proposed budget and work plan include a total of $64 million for Norfolk District civil works projects in Virginia through FY16-17.

    Construction is underway on the new Defense Logistics Agency Aviation operations center on Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia. Phase I of the project is scheduled to be complete by late summer 2018. When completed, the five-story building will house roughly 875 employees.

    Final Gathright Dam pulse release of 2015 scheduled for Wednesday

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct the final pulse release of the year Wednesday. The pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. and will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River.

    Gathright Dam pulse release underway

    At 6 a.m. today, operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia began conducting a pulse release. The pulse will gradually increase and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second by 9 a.m. The maximum surge will last two hours, begin to gradually decrease at 11 a.m., and return to 240 cfs by 1:30 p.m.

    Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct a pulse release Wednesday.
  • The North Landing Bridge spans the Atlantic Coastal Waterway between Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. The 65 year old dual span swing bridge was hit by a barge in the early morning hours of March 1, 2016.

    North Landing Bridge closed for emergency repairs

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the North Landing Bridge on Route 165 for emergency repairs beginning at 9 a.m. today. The bridge will be closed to vehicular and marine traffic as engineers perform the repairs, which are expected to be complete before 5 p.m. today.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its project partner, Virginia Port Authority, invite the public to attend a National Environmental Policy Act scoping meeting Sept. 24, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on the third floor of Nauticus Museum, Living Sea Landing, 1 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, Virginia.
  • The USACE Inland Electronic Navigational Chart (IENC) Program is responsible for all inland navigational charts in the United States, which commercial and recreational users rely on. The Army Geospatial Center (AGC) recognized the need for an app that allows boaters to easily view the navigation charts from their mobile devices like smart phones and tablets and tapped into the resources the Louisville District has to offer to develop this capability.
Drew McPheron, a computer engineering co-op student from the University of Louisville, has been developing the new app, which distributes 107 inland charts via the web

    Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for Sept. 2

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct a pulse release Wednesday. The pulses will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River, and experts advise people who use the river to be aware of the river fluctuations caused by the pulses.
