Gathright Dam to halt outflow as contractors perform routine inspection

Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

COVINGTON, Va. -- The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled a routine inspection at Gathright Dam from Feb. 22 through March 4, 2016. 

During this period, outflows will be halted for up to six hours each day, allowing contractors to inspect the sluice gates.  

Jackson River users can expect fluctuating water levels during this period.  

Norfolk District hydrologists will post notices about the specific times of outflow changes resulting from the inspection at http://www.nab-wc.usace.army.mil/nao/projected_Q.html

The inspection schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions.
