  • President’s budget includes $27.9M for Virginia civil works projects

    President Obama’s proposed Fiscal Year 2016 budget transmitted to Congress includes $4.732 billion in gross discretionary funding for the civil works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Of that sum, the budget provides $27,968,000 for a variety of Norfolk District projects, including $800,000 to study the deepening of the Norfolk Harbor Channel to 55 feet.

    The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study's goals are to 1) Provide risk reduction strategies—reduce risk to which vulnerable coastal populations are subject 2) Promote coastal resilient communities—ensure a sustainable and robust coastal landscape system—considering future sea level rise and climate change scenarios—to reduce risk to vulnerable population, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The $19.5 million Comprehensive Study is due to congress in January 2015.     The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

  • NORFOLK, VA. -- Edward Burr was Norfolk's sixth commander. While in command of the Norfolk U.S. Engineers Office, Capt. Edward Burr oversaw improvements to the inland water route (Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal) from Norfolk, Virginia to Albemarle Sound, North Carolina. These improvements included logging and dredging operations on the North Landing River, as well as straightening the river and making it 80 feet wide and 9 feet deep. The Norfolk Office also removed multiple sunken vessels near Thimble Shoals and off the coast of Cape Charles, Virginia. The Norfolk staff performed a preliminary examination of the harbor at Petersburg,Va. and the Appomattox River, and found the plan to divert the waters of the old North Chanel above Petersburg to prevent shoaling of the harbor and navigable channel not worthy of improvement.
