    Norfolk District closes Dismal Swamp Canal indefinitely

    Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced that the Dismal Swamp Canal will be closed indefinitely.

The purpose of the project is to improve water access to the East River for multiple property owners situated along Kings Creek. The project is located within Kings Creek, a tributary to the East River, and is situated north of Riverview Road and south of Kings Creek Lane in Mathews County, Virginia.

    Corps schedules 15-minute closures at Deep Creek Bridge Wednesday

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the Deep Creek Bridge to traffic for 15 minute intervals Wednesday, Dec. 14, between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

    The Norfolk District proposes the reissuance with minor revisions to better describe authorized activities of Regional Permit 20 (RP-20), scheduled to expire on May 24, 2017. RP-20 authorizes the creation of artificial reefs (oyster and fish haven) and dredging of old shellfish reefs, when the material, dredge shell or structural, will be used to create new or enhance existing natural or artificial reefs owned, operated or managed by the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.

    Mosquito spraying scheduled for Portions of Portsmouth Tuesday

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying Tuesday November 1st over federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties, and the Churchland area in Portsmouth.

    Vulcan is proposing to expand mining operation at the existing quarry. The project will impact 1.22 acres of forested wetlands, 0.88 acre of emergent wetlands, 0.63 acre of open water, and 440 linear feet of stream channel. Total cumulative impacts for the project are 1.81 acres of forested wetlands, 0.88 acre of emergent wetlands, 0.63 acre of open water and 645 linear feet of stream channel. The applicant indicated that impact have been avoided and minimized by avoiding impacts to the James River and its RPA and Goode Creek. To mitigate for the proposed impacts, the applicant proposed to purchase 3.32 wetland credits from the James River Mitigation Bank and 359 stream credits from the Amelia Environmental Bank.

  • The North Landing Bridge, which spans the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway on the border of Chesapeake, Virginia and Virginia Beach, Virginia, handles approximately 11,000 vehicles per day under normal conditions. The bridge was damaged by two separate barge strikes, the first on March 1, 2016, the second on June 4, 2016.

    North Landing Bridge to Close to Vehicle Traffic for 4 Days

    The North Landing Bridge will close to vehicle traffic from 9 a.m. Oct. 11 to 4 p.m. Oct. 14 to fully repair the damage sustained during two barge strikes earlier this year.
