The Virginia Peninsula Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study examines coastal and riverine flooding in the Cities of Hampton and Poquoson, VA. The study will focus on areas with a history of repetitive flood damage from coastal storms, evaluating the federal interest and the feasibility of implementing nonstructural measures. These nonstructural measures include floodproofing critical infrastructure and elevating homes to manage coastal storm risk.
Based on the study findings, USACE and Cities of Hampton and Poquoson will partner to develop a plan that will tangibly improve economic resiliency of at-risk communities in the study area.
Study Authorization and Funding:
The study is authorized under Public Law 84-71, enacted June 15, 1955, which allows for the examination and survey of coastal and tidal areas of the eastern and southern United States, with particular reference to areas where severe damages have occurred from hurricane winds and tides. The study is 100% federally funded for $3 million under the Disaster Relief Act of 2019.
