    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded a New York City-based company a $23 million contract to build a new computational research facility at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

    Alicia Drive Associates, LLC proposes to impact 1.42 acres of palustrine forested wetlands and 165 linear feet of jurisdictional ditch for the construction of a 264-unit apartment complex. The applicant proposes to compensate for impacts to the 1.42 acres of forested wetlands at a 2:1 ratio and the 0.01 acres of jurisdictional ditch at a 1:1 ratio through the purchase of 2.85 credits from the Middle Peninsula Environmental Properties, Inc. Public comments are due by Nov. 14, 2014.

    Comment Period Extension for the Clean Water Act Proposed Rule for Definition of Waters of the U.S.: The comment period which was originally scheduled to end on July 21, 2014, had been previously extended to October 20, 2014. Comments now must be received on or before November 14, 2014.

    The Norfolk District has cancelled the sixth and final pulse release from Gathright Dam due to heavy rainfall expected in the area over the next 24 to 36 hours.
  • Historic Fort Norfolk to close for maintenance and repairs Oct. 14

    Fort Norfolk will close to visitors from Oct. 14 to Dec. 12 as contractors perform various maintenance and repairs to the historic War of 1812-era coastal fortification.

    Maintenance repairs to saw cut and patch deteriorated concrete portions of the Deep Creek Bridge’s approach road were completed ahead of schedule Oct. 6.

    Dominion Terminals Associates proposes to deepen the berthing and approach to their facilities from -52.6 ft MLW to -57 ft MLW, to provide access and berthing for larger coal and bulk material handling vessels. The public comment period ends Oct. 19, 2014. The current dredge footprint of 26.5 acres of subaqueous, unconsolidated bottom will be maintained, with a proposed removal of an additional 166,750 cubic yards of material, with planned disposal at Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area or Craney Island Rehandling Basin (dependant on dredging method). All work will take place at 600 Harbor Road - pier 11, in Newport News, Virginia.

    Corps schedules maintenance at Deep Creek Bridge, Sept. 28 to Oct. 9

    The Deep Creek Bridge will undergo scheduled maintenance repairs to the span’s concrete approach between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning Sept. 28, through the morning of Oct. 9, weather permitting.

    The City of Chesapeake is proposing improvements to 1.9 miles of Route 337 (Portsmouth Boulevard in Chesapeake and Nansemond Boulevard in Suffolk) between I-664 interchange in Chesapeake and Helen St. in Suffolk, Virginia. The improvements include widening the road from two lanes to four lanes, adding sidewalks, constructing a multi-use path, etc. Construction of the improvements will result in the permanent impact 1.07 acres of nontidal wetland and open water ditch, and 481 linear feet of stream. The public comment period ends on October 26, 2014.

    VDOT, FHWA and USACE signed the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project Sept. 18 and released it for public comment.
