  • 408-NAO-2025-0091 - Coastal Precast System Chesapeake Facility Maintenance Dredging

    Interested parties are hereby notified that a request for permission to alter a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) federal project pursuant to Section 14 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899, 33 U.S.C. 408 (Section 408) has been received and is under evaluation by the Norfolk District. This Section 408 request was submitted by Coastal Precast System (CPS) to perform continued maintenance dredging of existing berthing areas at their Chesapeake facility along the Southern Branch Elizabeth River at 1316 Yacht Drive, Chesapeake, VA. The berths will be dredged mechanically, and the dredged material will be transported via barge to the CPS facility in Cape Charles, VA or to the Dominion Recycling in Chesapeake, VA for upland disposal. Berths A and B are maintained at -14 ft mean low water (MLW), Berth C is maintained to -15 ft MLW, Berth D is maintained to -12 ft MLW, Berth E is maintained to -10 ft MLW and Berth F is maintained to -5 ft MLW. This project may alter the Southern Branch Elizabeth River reach of the Norfolk Harbor and Channels Federal Navigation Project. Comments should be received by the close of business on November 21, 2025.
  • NAO-2010-0809 (Naval Station Norfolk, Maintenance Dredging, Elizabeth River and Willoughby Bay, Virginia)

    The Navy is proposing to perform maintenance dredging at Naval Station Norfolk on the Elizabeth River and Willoughby Bay in Norfolk, Virginia. This project includes maintenance dredging throughout the installation and ocean and/or upland disposal of the dredged material. Approximately 7.7 million cubic yards of material will be dredged from a 340-acre area during the 10-year maintenance period. Dredge material disposal alternatives include ocean placement at the Norfolk Ocean Disposal Site (NODS), placement at the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, and/or disposal at another upland site. This public notice is being issued for comments related to the regulatory permits, and also to satisfy the requirements for Section 103 of the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act of 1972. Public comments should be received by close of business Sept. 13, 2023.

    In order to maintain deep water access to its commercial marine repair facility, Marine Hydraulics International proposes maintenance dredging to a depth of -38.14 feet at mean low water. The location of the existing berthing area is located in Norfolk, on the Elizabeth River, at approximate location latitude 36.8617 and longitude -76.3125. Approximately 85,000 cubic yards of material will be mechanically dredged, placed in scow barges, and transported to the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area and deposited in the Rehandling Basin.

    Norfolk District has prepared a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment on behalf of the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), Joint Base Langley-Eustis, to assess the potential impacts of maintenance dredging the Skiffes Creek Channel, a tributary of the James River. Comment period ends on May 30, 2014.
