The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, or USACE, will hold a public meeting July 10, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5921 Harbour View Boulevard, Suffolk, Virginia. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Proposed Plans for the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot, or FNOD, Formerly Used Defense Sites, or FUDs, Suffolk, Virginia.

The USACE restoration efforts at FNOD are focused on three sites where the Department of Defense conducted operations between 1917 and 1950. The sites include: Horseshoe Pond, Impregnite Kit Area, and Area of Concern 22. The preferred remedy is Limited Debris and Soil Removal for the Horseshoe Pond and No Further Action for the Impregnite Kit Area and Area of Concern 22.

The Proposed Plans summarizes the preferred remedy and rationale for remedy selection. The plans also present information concerning past activities and investigations that have been conducted at each site.

The USACE is responsible for environmental investigations and cleanup activities of these sites under the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 3 and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality are supporting federal and state agencies in the decision-making process.

Your comments on the Proposed Plans are welcome. In addition to the public meeting July 10 to address any comments, there will be a public comment period from June 30 to July 30, 2014.
