Great Bridge Lock Phase 1 of 2 valve replacement

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will perform valve replacement and diving at Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake, Virginia, starting Feb. 20 and concluding around March 16. The following information is provided:

1) Installation of a cofferdam on the lock wall's northeast end will occur Feb. 20-21. The lock will be closed 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

2) From Feb. 25 to around March 16, a crew will be working on removal and installation of the replacement valve seven days a week. During this time period, there will be occasional delays to navigation to provide crane support in the lock.

3) During the week of March 19, removal and relocation of the cofferdam will take place. The exact time and closure will be announced in a separate "Notice to Navigation Interests" next month.

The lock's horizontal clearance will be limited to 70 feet during these repairs. Vessels shall provide a large berth to the work area, which will be marked with a yellow safety beam on the lock wall.

Those planning to use this route can contact the Great Bridge Lock operator at 757-547-3311, Norfolk District office at 757-201-7642 or refer to the Coast Guard's "Local Notice to Mariners" for more information.
