    This week is Virginia Flood Awareness Week, addressing the nation’s most common and costly natural disaster. The observance foreshadows the Atlantic hurricane season, which starts June 1, and is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Dam Safety and Floodplain Management – the commonwealth’s national flood insurance coordinator.

    Norfolk District to begin Dismal Swamp Canal dredging

    CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to begin Dismal Swamp Canal dredging early next week – roughly a year ahead of schedule due to lingering impacts from Hurricane Matthew in 2016. The maintenance work should be completed by April.

    Chamber valves to be replaced at Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake

    NORFOLK, Va. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will replace three of eight chamber valves at Great Bridge Lock along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Chesapeake starting today. The $950,000 project is a joint effort by Norfolk District and neighboring Huntington District in West Virginia.
