    Corman-Wagman a joint venture proposes to temporarily and permanently impact approximately 2.61 acres of jurisdictional wetlands and waters of the United States consisting of 2.01 acres of permanent impacts, 0.08 acre of permanent conversion impacts, and 0.35 acre of temporary impacts for the widening of the existing four-lanes of Route1 to six lanes, between Telegraph Road (Route 611) and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway (Route 235), in Fairfax County, Virginia.     NAO-Skiffes Creek Channel Maintenance Dredging_SEA_PN 2014

    Norfolk District has prepared a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment on behalf of the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), Joint Base Langley-Eustis, to assess the potential impacts of maintenance dredging the Skiffes Creek Channel, a tributary of the James River. Comment period ends on May 30, 2014.

    Hanover Land Investors, LLC proposes to construct a mixed-use development within the designated high-density suburban area in Hanover County, Va. The project consists of the construction of a commercial development, 48 single family homes, 73 town homes, and associated erosion and sediment control structures, and wil permanently impact 1.46 acres of forested wetlands and temporarily impact 0.06 acre of forested wetlands and 0.18 acre of open water for the construction of roads, sanitary sewer lines, lots, low-impact development features, and a storm water pond. Public comment period ends May 29, 2014.

    The Nature Conservancy proposes to expand a compensatory wetland mitigation site which is known as MJ-1 Rivanna River (Lamb) VARTF project and is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. The purpose of the mitigation project is to provide off-site compensatory mitigation for projects that result in unavoidable impacts to waters of the United States in the Middle James drainage basin. The goal of the mitigation site is to provide appropriate mitigation for impacts, within the authorized service area, by performing wetland buffer restoration.

    The applicant, Stickbow, LLC., proposes to complete construction of a residential community, titled North Ridge Phase II, that was previously permitted under a COE Individual Permit but has since expired. The approximately 185 acre site is located north of the Town of Culpeper and south of Chestnut Fork Road (State Route 685) in Culpeper County, Va. The project is located along Jonas Run and its associated tributaries.

    Bizzack Construction, LLC proposes to construct as a Design-Build project, a 6.2 mile-long four-lane, median divided, rural principal arterial highway (US Route 460) on new alignment and a new connection to State Route 609 at Bull Gap. Public comment period ends May 18.

    A residential and commercial development is proposed to be built near route 29, north of airport road, Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Va. The development will be called Northe Point and will have impacts to waters of the United States in the amount of 2,922 linear feet of intermittent streams and 0.27 acres of wetlands.

    Coman Construction Inc. proposes to permanently impact 0.64 acres of Palustrine forested wetlands, permanently impact 60 square feet of jurisdiction ditch and temporarily impact 0.056 acres of Palustrine forested wetlands for a road widening project of the east and westbound lanes of Interstate 64, at the state route 288 interchange, in Goochland County, Va. Comment period ends May 2, 2014.

    Kings Dominion has submitted an application to expand the existing campground. The project includes the construction of 48 cabins and access roads and parking. The proposed project will impact 0.24 acre of forested wetlands. To mitigate for the proposed wetland impacts, the applicant proposes to purchase 0.48 wetland credits from an approved wetland mitigation bank. Previous authorized impacts associated with the construction of Paramount King’s Dominion are 5.6 acres of wetlands and 621 linear feet of stream channel.

    The Norfolk District has prepared a draft Environmental Assessment on behalf of Joint Base Langley Eustis (JBLE) and Defense Logistic Agency (DLA) to assess the potential impacts of the DLA construction of a new fuel and associated dredging of the Langley Air Force Base (LAFB) pier for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) fuel pier replacement project, located at the Langley Air Force Base (LAFB) in Hampton, Va.

    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Operations Center – Atlantic, proposes new maintenance dredging at their facility. Approximately 85,000 cubic yards of material is proposed to be dredged at the approach and berthing areas along NOAA MOC-A’s shoreline in the Elizabeth River in order to provide safe navigation for current and future vessel support. The material will be dredged either hydraulically and pumped directly into the upper cells of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, or mechanically dredged, placed in scows, barged to Craney Island, and deposited in the Craney Island Rehandling Basin. Comment period ends May 14, 2014.

    Corps studies accessibility for Cemetery

    A team from the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is traveling around and taking notes at Arlington National Cemetery to assess how accessible sections of the 150-year-old facility are for disabled visitors.

    Lowe's Home Centers LLC proposes to construct a Lowe’s Home Improvement store and outlots with attendant parking, utilities and stormwater management east of Leesburg in Loudoun County, Va. Comments are due by May 7, 2014.
  • Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, signs the environmental permit authorizing Henry County, Va., to develop two facilities at the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center. The project required a federal permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. The permit allows the county to provide infrastructure, transportation and pad site improvements and authorizes mitigation of the impacts to wetlands and streams in the area.

    The Norfolk District authorized the environmental permit to develop the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center in Henry County, Va. here today. The Henry County Industrial Development Authority agreed to the proffered permit sent by Norfolk District last week, which allowed Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, to finalize and authorize the permit.

  • The North Landing Bridge spans the Atlantic Coastal Waterway between Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. The 65 year old dual span swing bridge was hit by a barge in the early morning hours of March 1, 2016.

    North Landing Bridge reopens after two-day repairs

    The North Landing Bridge in Chesapeake, Va. reopened this afternoon after maintenance crews replaced electrical cables at the bridge.

  • 2014 WETLANDS HYDROLOGY AND GROWING SEASON DETERMINATIONS

    On April 2, 2014, Norfolk District Regulatory office released a public notice regarding preceding precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations. Based on analysis of several rainfall recording stations and reference groundwater monitoring wells within the Hampton Roads region, the Norfolk District has determined that antecedent precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations has been within normal ranges for the Southside and below normal ranges for the Peninsula. In addition, several of the indicators of plant biological activity signaling the start of the growing season as described in the regional supplements were observed broadly across southeastern Virginia as early as Feb. 20, 2014.

    Regulators with the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers here forwarded an initial proffered permit to Henry County Industrial Development Authority officials today, crossing an important milestone in the federal permitting process for the proposed Commonwealth Crossing Business Center in Henry County, Va.

    The North Landing Bridge in Chesapeake, Va. will close to navigation from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2.
