The North Landing Bridge spans the Atlantic Coastal Waterway between Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, Virginia. The 65 year old dual span swing bridge was hit by a barge in the early morning hours of March 1, 2016.

North Landing Bridge to temporarily close

NORFOLK, Va. –- The North Landing Bridge in Chesapeake, Va. will close to navigation from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 and Wednesday, April 2.

The closure, which is required as crews replace electrical cables at the bridge, will prevent passage through the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal – Route 1– of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. 

The North Landing Bridge is located at mile 20.2 of the AIWW.

Vessels on the AIWW during the closure may use Route 2 through the Dismal Swamp Canal. The controlling depth of the canal is 6 feet, and the locking times are 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Vessel operators may call 757-201-7642 regarding the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal closure or Dismal Swamp Canal conditions. Lock and bridge operators monitor marine channel 13.
