    The Commanding Officer of the Naval Station Norfolk proposes the following activities at Pier 3 on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, VA: demolition of existing Piers 3 and 3T, construction of a new submarine berthing pier, repairs to two existing bulkheads, dredging of approximately 7.65 acres of open water, and filling of approximately 0.51 acres of deep open water areas. Dredged material will be disposed of the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area.”

The purpose of the mitigation project is to provide off-site compensatory mitigation for projects that result in unavoidable impacts to wetlands and other waters of the United States in the Lynnhaven-Poquoson and York River Drainage Basins.

  • Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area - Potential Impacts On Future Deposits Due To Limited Capacity

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District’s Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA) provides a cost-effective placement option for suitable navigation-related dredged material from the Norfolk Harbor and adjacent waterways. Due to these cost advantages, many in the dredging industry have come to regularly utilize the CIDMMA for the placement of dredged material. This Notice to Navigation Interests is targeted at dredging industry providers to inform their planning options for future dredging projects.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE:  The applicant proposes to construct a 100,000 square foot warehouse, parking lot, utilities as well as extend Harley Club Drive by 300 feet on 7.5 acres.  The applicants stated purpose is to construct a warehouse to meet the need for warehouse space in central Virginia that is not adequate to meet demand.  The project will permanently impact 0.52 acres of palustrine forested wetlands and temporarily impact 0.02 acres of palustrine forested wetlands.

The project is located within the limits of the existing Northern Virginia Stream Restoration Mitigation Bank (Bank), along the Glade Branch stream reach and the Snakeden Branch stream reach in Fairfax County, Virginia.
