    FNOD draft public involvement plan available for public comment

    The public is invited to comment within a 30-day period on the 2026 FNOD Public Involvement Plan (PIP) which replaces the February 2023 PIP. This discusses the public involvement activities that will be implemented to both maintain and improve communication efforts between USACE and stakeholders as part of USACE’s ongoing Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) remedial response effort at FNOD.

    SUFFOLK, Va. -- A munition uncovered by contractors lays on the ground at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot on Dec. 2, 2005. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999. Paul Olsen, commander of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Norfolk District signed the U.S. Route 460 draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, Sept. 18, in Suffolk, Va.     Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA), also known as Craney Island, is the “Jewel in the Port of Hampton Roads.” Since its construction in 1957, Craney Island’s centralized location provides a low-cost placement option for material dredged from Hampton Roads navigation channels, as well as from private dredging projects.

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the city of Portsmouth, Va., will conduct the final joint aerial mosquito spraying of the season tomorrow at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the Churchland area in Portsmouth.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host its quarterly meeting of the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot, or FNOD, Restoration Advisory Board Thursday, March 7, from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at the Courtyard Marriott located at 8060 Harbour View Boulevard in Suffolk, Va.

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Portsmouth will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., August 10, at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the north Churchland area in Portsmouth, Va.
