In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot  became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     Gathright Dam pulse release set for Aug. 27

    Covington, VA- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District will conduct a pulse release at Gathright Dam, near Covington, Va., Wednesday, August 27 beginning at approximately 6 a.m. Water releases will gradually increase and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) by 9 a.m. The maximum surge will last two hours, begin to gradually decrease at 11 a.m., and return to 242 cfs by 1:30 p.m.
