Deputy Commander and Deputy District Engineer

Lt. Col. Robert Haupt is the deputy commander and deputy district engineer at Norfolk District.

Haupt attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.  During that time, he attended the Army ROTC program, Air Assault School, and Airborne School. He graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army.

Haupt entered active duty and attended the U.S. Army Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  His first unit assignment was with the 588th Engineer Battalion (Mechanized) at Fort Hood, Texas, and was assigned as combat engineer platoon leader, assault and obstacle platoon leader, and company executive officer. During that tour he graduated the challenging Sapper Leader Course at Fort Leonard Wood.

Haupt then attended the Engineer Officer Advanced Course at Fort Leonard Wood and the Combined Arms and Services Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He went on to serve as the company commander of A Company, 37th Engineer Battalion at Fort Bragg, NC.

After Company Command, Haupt was selected for training in Military Information Support Operations, where he studied strategic and multimedia communications.  After a yearlong training program, Haupt deployed to Iraq and managed media programs in support of U.S. and coalition forces.

After completing his tour in Iraq, he attended the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  Following that, he returned to Fort Bragg, NC to be the 20th Engineer Brigade plans officer where he deployed again to Iraq.  Upon return from deployment, he was assigned as the operations officer of the 27th Engineer Battalion.  

Following that assignment, Haupt was assigned as the XVIII Airborne Corps G5 engineer planner and deployed to Haiti on short notice to support Operation Unified Response Humanitarian Assistance efforts in response to the earthquake.

Haupt’s last assignment was as the 20th Engineer Brigade Technical Section officer in charge and design engineer responsible for troop construction design and project management.  In a third deployment to Iraq, Haupt was responsible for the brigade’s portfolio of construction projects in Iraq and was the director of public works for Contingency Operating Base Adder for the final six months of Operation New Dawn.

After recently earning his Master’s degree in Management and Leadership from Webster’s University and the Project Management Professional certification, he was assigned to the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Haupt is married and has one child.
