    Craney Island mosquito spraying scheduled for tomorrow

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct aerial mosquito spraying tomorrow over federal property on Craney Island. Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Crabbe Aviation, LLC will spray liquid mosquito larvicide to target developing mosquito larvae at federal properties on Craney Island.

    Budget, USACE Work Plan provide $64 million for Virginia efforts

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Tuesday delivered to Congress its Fiscal Year 2016 (FY 2016) work plan for the Army Civil Works program just hours after the president released his proposed FY 17 budget. The proposed budget and work plan include a total of $64 million for Norfolk District civil works projects in Virginia through FY16-17.

  • Norfolk beach expansion combats sea-level rise

    The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study's goals are to 1) Provide risk reduction strategies—reduce risk to which vulnerable coastal populations are subject 2) Promote coastal resilient communities—ensure a sustainable and robust coastal landscape system—considering future sea level rise and climate change scenarios—to reduce risk to vulnerable population, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure. The $19.5 million Comprehensive Study is due to congress in January 2015.     USACE releases report on coastal storm, flood risk in North Atlantic region

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released to the public a report detailing the results of a two-year study to address coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable populations, property, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the North Atlantic region of the United States affected by Hurricane Sandy in October, 2012.

    Cemetery’s Welcome Center renovations set to start later this month

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded Polu Kai Services, LLC -- a native Hawaiian owned, small disadvantaged business, service-disabled veteran owned business -- with a $4.3 million contract on August 25 to make upgrades to the facility, including its basement space visitor bathrooms, and the electrical, water and fire protection systems.

    District continues commitment to James; issues order to dredge

    As part of the three year, $12 million indefinite delivery/indefinite quality contract with Cottrell Contracting Corporation, the district issued a $3.2 million task order to dredge 475,000 cubic yards of sediment causing shoals in the James River at Dancing Point and Jordan Point on June 17.

    Worst-case scenario forecasting helps district plan for hurricane season

    Six feet of murky river water swirls around desks, seeps through walls and begins corroding wires. It’s a scenario that would put Norfolk District out for six months and cause $10 million or more in damage. “All it would take is a hurricane catching us at high tide and that could be a reality for us,” said Stan Ballard, district emergency management services chief. Ballard gathered leadership for Continuity of Operations meeting, or COOP, to anticipate needs, abilities and work-arounds for the more than 300 Norfolk District employees in such a scenario.

    Michelle Hamor, chief of Norfolk District’s flood plain management section, is the 2013 recipient of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Manager of the Year Award.     Erin Juergens, a logistics management specialist with the Norfolk district, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was doing what she did best just before boarding a plane from Virginia to South Bridge, Mass.: last-minute packing. Juergens was one of two Corps employees and 144 civilian participants from all branches of the military attending the 2013 course. Approximately 600 people applied.

    Corps, congressional delegation discuss Martinsville project

    Members of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality met with members of Virginia's congressional delegation here today to discuss the permit application for a Martinsville, Va., business center complex. The meeting focused on a federal permit application for the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center, a proposed 726-acre development in Henry County, Va.
  • FAR ROCKAWAY, N.Y. – Col. Paul Olsen assures a local resident at the Redfern Housing Complex that the Corps of Engineers is working with local and state authorities to get power restored to the complex as quickly as possible.     Through the lens on Sandy recovery

    I saw blue skies, and in the distance, the skyline of Manhattan with the sunlight glistening off the glass-clad skyscrapers like it would on any typical day. But, as I would quickly find out first-hand, nothing was typical in Lower Manhattan, or in many parts of the tri-state area.
