    Corps signs Commonwealth Crossing permit

    The Norfolk District authorized the environmental permit to develop the Commonwealth Crossing Business Center in Henry County, Va. here today. The Henry County Industrial Development Authority agreed to the proffered permit sent by Norfolk District last week, which allowed Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District commander, to finalize and authorize the permit.

    On April 2, 2014, Norfolk District Regulatory office released a public notice regarding preceding precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations. Based on analysis of several rainfall recording stations and reference groundwater monitoring wells within the Hampton Roads region, the Norfolk District has determined that antecedent precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations has been within normal ranges for the Southside and below normal ranges for the Peninsula. In addition, several of the indicators of plant biological activity signaling the start of the growing season as described in the regional supplements were observed broadly across southeastern Virginia as early as Feb. 20, 2014.

    SOUTH MILLS, N.C. – The Great Dismal Swamp Canal pedestrian bridge reopened at 5 p.m., March 19, after a two-week closure to repair cylinders in a hydraulic arm weld, which had broken from the bridge’s bascule.

    Chesapeake Landing Home Owners Association proposes to construct a 130-foot-long breakwater, to construct a 230-foot-breakwater with an attached 75-foot-long sill connecting to an existing rip rap revetment, and to place approximately 3,333 cubic yards of beach nourishment landward of the proposed breakwaters which will include the installation of sand fencing and the planting of sand dune grasses.     Great Dismal Swamp Canal Bridge closed for repairs

    SOUTH MILLS, N.C. – The Great Dismal Swamp Canal Bridge is closed for repairs through the first week of March. On Feb. 27, a maintenance crew from the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources closed the pedestrian bridge, which crosses onto the Dismal Swamp Canal between North Carolina and Virginia.
