    The applicant, Colonna’s Shipyard, proposes to relocate Drydock #3. The project consists of dredging a 545-foot by 155-foot (80,325 sf) basin to achieve maximum depths of -48 feet MLW and a 230-foot by 260-foot (59,800 sf) access channel to achieve maximum depths of -28 feet MLW to accommodate the relocation. Dredged materials will be placed at the Craney Island Dredged Materials Management Area (CIDMMA) Rehandling Basin for the initial dredging cycle. Drydock #3 is currently located 200 feet to the west but must be relocated for safety.

  • Deep Creek Bridge Project receives $12.6M in USACE Work Plan

    WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) delivered to Congress its Fiscal Year 2021 (FY 2021) Work Plan for the Army Civil Works program on January 19, 2021, which included funding appropriations for the Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project in Chesapeake, Virginia in the amount of $12,657,000.

    A Joint Permit Application (VMRC#20-1504) has been received from the City of Hampton to renourish a section of Buckroe Beach approximately 3,483 feet in length, from Pilot Avenue to Resort Boulevard, in Hampton, Virginia. The purpose of the beach renourishment project is to provide protection to the roadways and structures along Buckroe Beach from erosion and storm damage. The plan proposes the placement of 275,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand, to a design berm width of approximately 180 feet at an elevation 7.4 feet North American Vertical Datum (NAVD). The total encroachment would impact approximately 4.99 acres of intertidal area and 25.37 acres of subaqueous bottom.

  • FEDERAL REGISTER NOTICE ANNOUNCING THE REISSUANCE OF THE NATIONWIDE PERMITS

    On January 13, 2021, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) published the notice in the Federal Register (86 FR 2744) announcing the reissuance of 12 existing nationwide permits (NWPs) and four new NWPs, as well as the reissuance of NWP general conditions and definitions with some modifications. These 16 NWPs will go into effect on March 15, 2021, and will expire on March 14, 2026:

    Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has prepared a draft Programmatic Environmental Assessment to assess a variety of requests from property owners for minor and low impact activities that alter the Sandbridge Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project.

    Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) is proposing to expand landfill operations at the existing Regional Landfill in Suffolk, Virginia off merged U.S. Routes 58, 13, and 460. Due to the anticipated wetland impacts and the scope of the project, the Corps is reviewing the project through the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act. The Corps is soliciting comments the proposed off-site alternatives.

    On Jan. 20, 4 - 7 p.m., a virtual public hearing will be held regarding a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Dominion Energy’s proposed Surry – Skiffes Creek – Whealton Aerial Transmission Line “Project." On November 27, a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Dominion Energy’s proposed Surry – Skiffes Creek – Whealton Aerial Transmission Line “Project” was released in the Federal Register. On November 30th, we issued a public notice announcing its release and request for comment. To date we have received several requests for a comment period extension. After consideration, we are extending the current suspense date an additional 30-days to February 10, 2021.

    Although she probably won’t, Norfolk District Deputy for Small Business Programs Cherie Kunze could sit back and enjoy some well-deserved downtime; after all, this is the third consecutive year Norfolk District met and surpassed district goals for awards to small businesses.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), along with the help of its One Federal Decision Cooperating Agencies, has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Virginia Electric Power Company (Dominion) proposal known as Surry – Skiffes Creek – Whealton Aerial Transmission Line “Project”. On Nov 27th the Notice of Availability for the DEIS was published in the Federal Register. The Corps is accepting comments until January 11, 2021 that will be used to inform the Final Environmental Impact Statement scheduled for the Spring of 2021.

    The applicant, 29:11 Chesterfield, proposes to construct a mixed-use development including retail, hotel, apartments and townhomes north east of the intersection of Iron Bridge and Courthouse roads in Chesterfield County, Virginia. This project is open for public comment through Dec. 24.

  • City of Norfolk Downtown Floodwall, Section 408 Review

    A request for review pursuant to Section 408 has been received from the City of Norfolk, for modifications to the existing Downtown floodwall, a federally authorized and non-federally operated flood risk management system. The city of Norfolk requests to modify the existing floodwall to add an additional two to four feet in height in order to maintain FEMA accreditation. These modifications will include making the existing wall higher and extending the outer reaches with floodwall extensions. The public comment period closes Dec. 7, 2020.

In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     FNOD Restoration Advisory Board virtual meeting set for Dec. 3

    SUFFOLK, Va. — Restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) remain an ongoing priority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Community members can learn more about this Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) and hear the latest cleanup progress during the project’s quarterly Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) virtual meeting scheduled for 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Dec. 3 via Webex.
