    SUFFOLK, Va. -- A munition uncovered by contractors lays on the ground at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot on Dec. 2, 2005. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.     USACE hosts FNOD Restoration Advisory Board virtual meeting June 3

    SUFFOLK, Va. — Restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) remain an ongoing priority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Community members can learn more about this Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) and hear the latest cleanup progress during the project’s quarterly Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) virtual meeting scheduled for 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. June 3 via Webex.

    The project is located on a site known as “Camptown Races” containing approximately 197 acres of land located on the east line of Elletts Crossing Road, the north line of Hickory Hill Road, and the west line of Interstate Route 95 in Hanover County, Virginia.  The site drains to the South Anna River, a tributary to the Pamunkey River within the York River watershed.  A vicinity map is attached.

    Corps conducts semi-annual inspection at Gathright Dam ahead of pulse releases

    COVINGTON, Va – The Norfolk District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) conducted a semi-annual inspection of the Gathright Dam on May 10-14 as part of the District's comprehensive dam safety program ahead of yearly pulse releases scheduled to begin in June.

    The proposed mitigation site is located on approximately 36 acres of agricultural land. The site is located in Thumb Run, a tributary to the Rappahannock River and in Fauquier County, Virginia. The sponsor proposes to establish, design, construct, and operate a compensatory wetland and stream mitigation site to be known as the Thumb Run Wetland and Stream Mitigation Bank. The purpose of the mitigation project is to provide off-site compensatory mitigation for projects that result in unavoidable impacts to wetlands and streams and other waters of the United States in the Rappahannock River Drainage Basin.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: Microsoft proposes to construct a new data center facility to house servers used in cloud-based computing. This facility will be constructed as part of a multi-phased campus development, which will consist of data center buildings, administration buildings, substations, a tank farm, parking, access roads, and security buildings. The campus will result in the permanent loss of 0.502 acres of wetlands, 2,069 linear feet of intermittent stream, & 992 linear feet of perennial stream, as well as temporary impacts to 0.03 acres of wetlands and 149 linear feet of stream.

    Public comments for Virginia Beach's Grommet Island Park construction closes May 11

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received a request for construction at Grommet Island Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia, that may impact a current USACE project mitigating erosion.

    A construction proposal regarding a mixed-use development as part of the Cosby Village development, to include the construction of buildings, parking lots and associated infrastructure, with impact to 1.12 acres of palustrine forested wetlands, emergent wetlands, open water, shrub wetlands and ephemeral stream is open for public comment.

    Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, received a request for permission to alter a USACE project located in Sandbridge, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and can potentially impact the Sandbridge Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project.

    A multidisciplinary team from the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an assessment of a local site for conversion into a federally supported community vaccination center, March 23, 2021, in Norfolk, Virginia. FEMA officially opened that location today as a Type 2 center, capable of administering approximately 3,000 vaccinations a day and directly supporting President Joe Biden’s goal of administering 100 million vaccinations within the first 100 days of his administration.

    Mountain Valley Pipeline, LLC submitted an application for a Department of the Army permit under the provisions of Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 (Section 10) and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act for proposed discharge of material into waters and work in and under navigable waters of the U.S.

    WATERWAY AND LOCATION OF THE PROPOSED WORK:  The project is located in the Levisa Fork River and tributary streams, near Grundy, Virginia. PROPOSED WORK AND PURPOSE:  The applicant proposes to construct 1.78 miles of new roadway, dually designated U.S. Highway 121/460-Poplar Creek Phase B.  The road will consist of 2 lanes with truck climbing lanes where necessary.  The project is proposed to extend from the east end of the dually designated U.S. 121/460 Poplar Creek Phase A Section, near State Route 604 (Poplar Creek Road), that is currently under construction to U.S. Route 460 near Grundy, VA.  Due to the mountainous terrain, road construction will require removal of a large amount of material to establish a suitable road alignment in the terrain.  Some of this material will be utilized as road fill but a large amount of excess fill material will require disposal.  This excess material will be disposed of in a valley resulting in stream impacts and utilize an existing disposal site permitted as part of the Phase A construction.
