    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District’s Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA) provides a cost-effective placement option for suitable navigation-related dredged material from the Norfolk Harbor and adjacent waterways. Due to these cost advantages, many in the dredging industry have come to regularly utilize the CIDMMA for the placement of dredged material.     PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE:  The applicant proposes to construct a 100,000 square foot warehouse, parking lot, utilities as well as extend Harley Club Drive by 300 feet on 7.5 acres.  The applicants stated purpose is to construct a warehouse to meet the need for warehouse space in central Virginia that is not adequate to meet demand.  The project will permanently impact 0.52 acres of palustrine forested wetlands and temporarily impact 0.02 acres of palustrine forested wetlands.

  • EARLY PUBLIC NOTICE OF A PROPOSED ACTIVITY WITH IMPACTS TO WETLANDS

    The United States Air Force (Air Force) is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate impacts associated with proposed construction improvements to the Third Port facility at Joint Base Langley-Eustis – Fort Eustis (JBLE-Eustis) located in Skiffes Creek. The purpose of the proposed project is to prepare JBLE-Eustis for up to 10 new vessels that will be assigned to the Third Port in the near future. Additionally, other improvements are proposed to increase the usable waterway for the existing fleet and new vessels and to aid in training for cargo logistics and vessel operations.

The applicant’s stated purpose is to allow for safe navigation of vessels utilizing Milford Haven, particularly commercial fishing boats, recreational boats, and the US Coast Guard while also providing beneficial use of the dredged material at a public beach that experiences a high erosion rate of -7 to -8 feet per year. Approximately 40,000 cubic yards of material will be dredged from HITW and deposited along 2,400 linear feet of shoreline at Haven Beach.

In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999.
