A multidisciplinary team from the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency in an assessment of a local site for conversion into a federally supported community vaccination center, March 23, 2021, in Norfolk, Virginia. FEMA officially opened that location today as a Type 2 center, capable of administering approximately 3,000 vaccinations a day and directly supporting President Joe Biden’s goal of administering 100 million vaccinations within the first 100 days of his administration.

Meetings are taking place inside the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton Virginia between local, state and federal representatives on how best to convert the building into an alternate care facility. The Federal Emergency Management Agency tasked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate and recommend sites for Alternative Care Facilities in Virginia, and Governor Northam approved locations in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads. Norfolk District personnel, along with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia National Guard and emergency management personnel from local and regional governments are now meeting with health care professionals and representatives from area health care systems to plan how best to convert the selected sites to meet their needs. USACE Galveston District awards second Corpus Christi Ship Channel dredging contract
GALVESTON, Texas – Yesterday the Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a second multi-million dollar contract for the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project. Callan Marine, LTD, of Galveston, Texas, will receive $97.9 million, including the base contract and seven options, to dredge Lower Bay Reach as part of Corps efforts to deepen and widen the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Five more options are contained in the contract and could be activated at a later date.

USACE awards construction contract for additional hospital space in Porterville, California
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a construction contract Sunday to Herman Construction Group, Inc. of Escondido, California, to retrofit the Porterville Developmental Center in Tulare County for an alternate care site in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alternate care facility site construction to begin in Novi, Michigan
DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, (USACE), Detroit District, announces it will begin construction on an alternate care facility in Novi, Michigan as efforts to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-led response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. The second conversion in Michigan will take place at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. USACE is coordinating design and construction efforts to adapt more than 250,000 square feet into medical care space. This conversion of the main floor will include approximately 1,100 bed spaces for COVID-19 patients and stations for medical personnel. “The situation in Michigan continues to evolve and the Corps of Engineers will surge resources to meet the anticipated need," said Lt. Col. Gregory Turner, district engineer, USACE, Detroit District. “This work that we are doing through FEMA to support the people of Michigan, especially enabling the local hospitals, is a mission that we are ready for.”

Clinton Lake dam road closure related to COVID-19
The road across Clinton Dam (E 900 Road) will be closed as of 9:00 a.m. on April 7, 2020, until further notice due to unsafe gatherings and parking conditions near the south end of the dam. This decision was made in conjunction with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department with the safety of our visitors and community in mind.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers evaluates Oahu, Kauai sites for use as potential alternate care facilities
In response to the spread of coronavirus in Hawaii, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Honolulu District technical survey team conducted initial planning and site assessments of two Oahu and five Kauai locations for potential conversion into alternate care facilities (ACFs). To date, the USACE team has completed 17 assessments in Hawaii - five on Oahu, three on Maui, five in Hawaii County, and four on Kauai.
