    Final FNOD board meeting of 2015 scheduled

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host their quarterly public meeting regarding restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot Thursday.

    The applicant proposes to construct improvements along the U.S. Route 460 Corridor. From approximately one mile west of Zuni to two miles west of Windsor (approximately 4 miles), the applicant proposes to reconstruct and upgrade existing Route 460 to a four-lane divided highway. From two miles west of Windsor to the Route 460/Route 58 interchange in Suffolk (approx 12 miles), the applicant proposes to construct a new four-lane divided highway that would run north around Windsor, then cross existing Route 460 east of Windsor and run south of the existing Route 460 to Route 58. The applicant proposes to permanently impact 35.77 acres of non-tidal wetlands, 7,663 linear feet of stream and 9,339 lf of jurisdictional ditches. To compensate for unavoidable impacts, the applicant proposes a combination of mitigation bank credits, restoration of wetlands, and preservation of wetlands to expand existing conservation areas.

    Lidl US LLC proposes to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Norfolk District and Virginia Department of Historic Resources under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The Edwards Ferry Retail project, a proposed grocery store and associated infrastructure, is located within the boundary of the Balls Bluff Battlefield Historic District in Leesburg, Virginia. Balls Bluff Battlefield Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Public comment period ends Dec. 4, 2015.

    The applicant proposes to widen the existing four-lane facility with a depressed median to a six-lane urban facility with a raised 28-foot wide median, with a five-foot wide concrete sidewalk on the south side of the road and a 10-foot wide multi-use path on the north side of the road in Suffolk, Virginia.

    The city of Virginia Beach proposes safety improvements to Sandbridge Road from McClanan’s Curve to about one-mile east of the intersection with Sandpiper Road in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The project would impact 9.402 acres of nontidal vegetated wetlands and 0.90 acres of nontidal non-vegetated open water ditches and drainage features. The project would also result in temporary impacts to 1.63 acres of nontidal vegetated wetlands and 0.019 acres of nontidal non-vegetated open water ditches and drainage features.     Chesbay Conservation LLC proposes to establish and operate a wetland compensatory mitigation bank to provide off-site compensatory mitigation for projects that result in unavoidable impacts to wetlands within the specified service area. The proposed mitigation bank site, to be known as the Chesapeake Bay Wetland Mitigation Bank, is comprised of approximately 96 acres of land situated south of John Clayton Memorial Highway (Route 14), west of Fickle Fen Road, and east of Honey Pod Lane in Mathews County, Virginia.     NAO-2015-01350 Carr Timber Movement

    Mitchell Carr proposes to place a cable across a portion of the James River in order to assist in getting logs from Buford Island to the shore for a logging operation. The cable will be sunk when not in use. The project is to last approximately 10 days and will be removed when complete. Public comment period ends Nov. 28, 2015.

    The district’s final end-of-year sprint capped off an active fiscal year, with 797 contract actions obligating $293.34 million on projects throughout the commonwealth – a 19.7 percent increase from the previous year.

    This public notice is being issued in accordance with Section 103 of the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA), for the planned transport and disposal of dredged material that will result from the proposed construction of a new two-lane parallel tunnel to the west of the existing Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel. Approximately 1.7 million cubic yards of dredged material from the project that meets Section 103 evaluation criteria is being proposed for disposal at the Norfolk Ocean Disposal Site.   • Final Gathright Dam pulse release of 2015 scheduled for Wednesday

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct the final pulse release of the year Wednesday. The pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. and will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River.
  • Craney Island mosquito spraying scheduled for Oct. 13

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015 at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties, and the Churchland area in Portsmouth.
