    Corps Releases Draft Report for Coastal Storm and Flood Risks

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today released a draft feasibility report for addressing coastal storm and flood risk to vulnerable property, populations, ecosystems, and infrastructure in the city.

    Norfolk District prepares response teams, project sites for Hurricane Joaquin

    Ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is taking the following measures to protect the health and safety of Virginians, and prevent flooding and damage at its military and civil work project sites throughout the commonwealth.

    SANDBRIDGE, Va. -- The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, partnering with the city of Virginia Beach, Va., began a five-mile hurricane protection and beach renourishment project in Sandbridge in mid-April, 2013. The $13.35 million non-federal project included the dredging and placement of approximately 2 million cubic yards of sand along public beachfront from Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the Dam Neck Naval facility.

    VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A five-mile hurricane protection and beach renourishment project in Sandbridge is complete.

    Gathright Dam located in Alleghany County, Va., impounds the water flowing down the Jackson River to create the 2,500 acre Lake Moomaw. The dam has prevented numerous floods over its 30 plus year existence saving countless dollars and lives.

    Gathright Dam ‘test pulse’ to increase Jackson River water flow

    State and federal agencies will use Gathright Dam near Covington, Va. to simulate a storm event on the Jackson River Oct. 3. The test pulse, conducted by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, will begin at approximately 6 a.m. and peak at 3,500 cubic feet per second.
