    The beaches at Willoughby Spit, East Ocean View and Ocean View have been widened to provide additional protection to city of Norfolk neighborhoods from wave damage during coastal storms. Crews finished up pumping sand onto the beach from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay on May 19, 2017. The beaches are no 60 feet wide and slope up to 5 feet above mean low water.

    Willoughby and Vicinity Project Coming to a Close

    Crews are finishing up work along the Willoughby and Vicinity Storm Damage Reduction Project. The result of the project leaves Norfolk with a beach that is higher and 60 feet wider improving coastal storm protection and providing more recreational area.

    Norfolk beach expansion combats sea-level rise

    Mayor Paul Fraim and other city of Norfolk leaders joined Col. Paul Olsen, Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commander, along Ocean View Beach to sign a historic project partnership agreement that lays the foundation for construction of a coastal storm damage reduction project.

The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the contract to Weeks Marine of Camden, N.J. The $11.925 million bid includes the placement of 1,250,000 cubic yards of sand from 17th Street to 70th Street. The federal investment for this re-nourishment cycle is $8.9 million, or 65 percent of the total project cost, including design, construction and administration costs.

    Corps to begin $11.9 million Virginia Beach renourishment project Dec. 1

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a contract to replenish the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The $11.92 million renourishment project, which will begin Dec. 1, includes the placement of 1,250,000 cubic yards of sand from 17th Street to 70th Street.
