    North Landing Bridge closes for repairs

    NORFOLK, Va. – The North Landing Bridge that spans the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal in Chesapeake, Va. will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic from 9 a.m. Monday, May 6, to 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, while the Army Corps of Engineers makes repairs to the bridge.

    Corps to spray for mosquitos at Craney Island Sept. 28

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will conduct aerial mosquito treatment over federal property at the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area on Friday, Sept. 28th. Crabbe Aviation, LLC, will use an Air Tractor, a fixed-wing aircraft similar to a dust cropper, to conduct a mosquito larvicide aerial treatment; weather permitting.

    The commander of the Norfolk District approved the reissuance and modification of six regional general permits which streamline the authorization of projects that have minimal impact on the aquatic environment.

    After evaluating the high water flows experienced on the Jackson River during Tropical Storm Florence earlier this week, District water managers made the decision to cancel the pulse release scheduled for Sept. 26 at Gathright Dam.

    Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for Sept. 2

    Operators at Gathright Dam near Covington, Virginia will conduct a pulse release Wednesday. The pulses will increase levels 3 to 4.5 feet in the Jackson River, and experts advise people who use the river to be aware of the river fluctuations caused by the pulses.

    William Price Craighill was the fourth officer in charge of what would later become the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He became the Corps’ first Southeast Division Engineer, overseeing coastal fortification projects in Hampton Roads.

    CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, reopened the Great Bridge Locks, on the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, for normal operations here Nov. 23.
