Lafayette Oyster Reefs
Approximately 14,000 oyster shell is being placed on sanctuary reefs spanning six acres near the Norfolk International Terminal in the Lafayette River. Mounds of oyster shell are staged on barges to be placed on oyster reefs marked by white poles in the water. A crane then moves the fossilized oyster shell onto the reef. This Norfolk International Terminal six-acre sanctuary reef is one of five reefs. The reef’s being constructed as part of the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project. The oyster mitigation process of the project will be completed in June 2014. All of the reefs will be permanent oyster sanctuaries.
