Fort Norfolk oyster reef
FORT NORFOLK, Va. -- Oceanographer Dave Schulte empties a bushel of oyster shell on the reef. Shell was donated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as well as collected by district volunteers at the Craney Island Eastward Expansion site in Portsmouth, Va. Each spring approximately 14,000 baby oysters are placed on the existing sanctuary reef off the shoreline of historic Fort Norfolk. Employees from the Norfolk District partnered with students from Seatack Elementary School in Virginia Beach in 2012 to build an oyster sanctuary along the shores of district’s property.
