Fort Norfolk oyster reef
FORT NORFOLK, Va.-- District volunteers carry a mesh netting to the reef, which will cover the top layer before baby oysters are added to their new habitat. The bottom of the reef is made of rock and granite; the middle portion is made of crushed shell and the top oyster shell. The baby oysters, added twice a year, will cling to the top layer of the reef.
