VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Contractors use bulldozers to spread sand at the Oceanfront’s 34th Street Jan. 10, 2013. The work was part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection and Beach Renourishment Project, which added 1,440,250 cubic yards of dredged sand between 15th and 70th streets. Two hopper dredges, tasked by the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, cycled from navigational channels north of Cape Henry to pump-out landing stations where dredged material was piped onshore.
