Fort Norfolk Oyster Reef
Karin Dridge, Norfolk District geographer, hauls one of 60 bushels of oyster shells delivered by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation April 2, 2012. Norfolk District partnered with fourth graders from Virginia Beach’s Seatack Elementary School in 2011 to grow baby oysters in floats and then create an oyster reef at historic Fort Norfolk. Oyster shell is a key component of the reef because oyster spat, or baby oysters, prefer to grow on other oysters. (U.S. Army photo/Kerry Solan)
