The Chesapeake Bay Foundation delivered 60 bushels of oyster shells to Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, April 2, 2012. The CBF collects empty oyster shells and recycles them to create oyster reefs and, in turn, restore native oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. Norfolk District partnered with fourth graders from Virginia Beach’s Seatack Elementary School in 2011 to grow baby oysters in floats and then, this spring, create an oyster reef at historic Fort Norfolk, where the Norfolk District is located. The reef is an effort to restore the oyster population and improve the health of the Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake Bay. (U.S. Army photo/Kerry Solan)
