Craney Island Facility Management

The Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area is an active U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works project. The site is located on the north side of Portsmouth, Virginia and consists of approximately 2,500 acres of dredged material management area. The site is served by a perimeter road approximately 6 miles in length located near the shoreline. The site has a primary containment dike approximately 8 miles in length and two division dikes that divide the site into three sub-containment areas. A Project Office is located near the entry gate at 4599 River Shore Road, Portsmouth, Virginia. Recreational user facilities are limited to several unpaved visitor parking areas. There are no other facilities provided for visitors.

VISITATION POLICY:

The Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area is closed to individual recreational visitors. On a case-by-case basis, staff members will accommodate organized group visits including area school groups, bird clubs, conservation groups and other natural resource groups. Such recreational group activities will, in most cases, be arranged during the weekend when there is no construction work underway.
