The First Baptist Church on Bute Street in Norfolk, Va., is now a registered Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places of the United States. Established around 1800 as an interracial body of whites, free blacks and slaves, the congregation split off in 1817, and the remaining, primarily black, congregation moved in 1830 to an old salt-storage warehouse on Butte Street that came to be known as the “the old salt box.” Lynette Rhodes and her husband, Clifford, were married at First Baptist Church and today calls First Baptist their church home.
