    Mosquito spraying scheduled for portions of Portsmouth tomorrow

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying tomorrow at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the Churchland area in Portsmouth.

    The beaches at Willoughby Spit, East Ocean View and Ocean View have been widened to provide additional protection to city of Norfolk neighborhoods from wave damage during coastal storms. Crews finished up pumping sand onto the beach from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay on May 19, 2017. The beaches are no 60 feet wide and slope up to 5 feet above mean low water.

    Willoughby and Vicinity Project Coming to a Close

    Crews are finishing up work along the Willoughby and Vicinity Storm Damage Reduction Project. The result of the project leaves Norfolk with a beach that is higher and 60 feet wider improving coastal storm protection and providing more recreational area.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close Fort Norfolk to visitors tomorrow through May 21.
  • CAMDEN COUNTY, N.C. -- The Dismal Swamp Canal offers boaters a tranquil and serene trip down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. On average, more than 700 boaters utilize the canal between the months of September and December.

    Corps announces timeline to reopen Dismal Swamp Canal

    Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced a goal of opening the Dismal Swamp Canal to its full 6-foot depth later this summer.

    Officials announce six dates for Gathright Dam pulse releases

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will deviate from Gathright Dam's existing water control plan in order to conduct six pulse releases near Covington, Virginia from June through October 2017.

    Corps' technical experts to discuss Suffolk superfund site clean-up efforts

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host their quarterly public meeting regarding restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot Thursday. The Restoration Advisory Board meeting; which will take place at the Courtyard Marriott, located at 8060 Harbour View Blvd. in Suffolk from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.; will feature discussions regarding the latest cleanup progress.
  • NORFOLK, VA – Heavy equipment is staged along the beach in Norfolk, Virginia’s East Ocean View neighborhood. Contractors will use the equipment to move dredged up sand on the beach to create a 60 foot wide beach berm that slopes to 5 feet above mean low water.     Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced that the Dismal Swamp Canal will be closed indefinitely.
