  • 408-NAO-2025-0088 (Town of Chincoteague Mariners Point Bulkhead)

    Expiration date: 10/24/2025

Interested parties are hereby notified that a request for permission to alter a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) federal project pursuant to Section 14 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899, 33 U.S.C. 408 (Section 408) has been received and is under evaluation by the Norfolk District. This Section 408 request was submitted by the Town of Chincoteague for the Town of Chincoteague Mariners Point Bulkhead. The project proposes the construction of 700 +/- linear feet of steel sheet piling bulkhead adjacent to the Town of Chincoteague's spoil site at the Curtis Merritt Harbor. The proposed bulkhead would be installed channelward of the existing concrete rubble berm on the westerly end of the property. The applicant proposes that all backfill materials will be sourced from the existing adjacent USACE joint-administered spoil site. The adjacent spoil site contains dewatered spoils from local ongoing dredging projects. This project would provide a beneficial use of those spoils. Construction would occur from land and construction barge. This project may alter the Chincoteague Inlet Federal Navigation Project and the associated Curtis Merritt Dredged Material Management Area. Comments should be received by the close of business on October 24, 2025.
  • NAO-2024-02816 (USFWS - Chincoteague NWR, Chincoteague, Virginia)

    Expiration date: 3/3/2025

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Beach Parking Relocation project is designed to relocate infrastructure and facilities needed to support the recreational beach including parking, access road, and facilities. The current recreational beach and parking lots have experienced severe damage over the years due to strong winds, waves, and storm surges in conjunction with high tides. Destruction of the existing recreational beach and parking lots is expected to reoccur on a regular basis in the future and more frequently. Therefore, to continue providing recreational beach access to visitors, relocation of the recreational beach is recommended. Comments should be received by the close of business on March 3, 2025.
