  • FEDERAL PUBLIC NOTICE – NOTICE TO NAVIGATION INTERESTS - Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area: Impacts on Future Deposits Due to Limited Capacity

    Navigation Interested parties are hereby notified of the continued limited capacity at the Norfolk District’s Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA). To accommodate infrastructure maintenance and engineering improvements to maximize dike raising efforts and future dredged material capacity, resumption of normal dredged material deposits into the upland cells and the rehandling basin of the CIDMMA are expected to be deferred through calendar year 2029 at a minimum. Potential CIDMMA users are urged to plan for alternative placement options for their projects through calendar year 2029.

    Dominion Terminals Associates proposes to deepen the berthing and approach to their facilities from -52.6 ft MLW to -57 ft MLW, to provide access and berthing for larger coal and bulk material handling vessels. The public comment period ends Oct. 19, 2014. The current dredge footprint of 26.5 acres of subaqueous, unconsolidated bottom will be maintained, with a proposed removal of an additional 166,750 cubic yards of material, with planned disposal at Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area or Craney Island Rehandling Basin (dependant on dredging method). All work will take place at 600 Harbor Road - pier 11, in Newport News, Virginia.

    Hanover County C/O Joe Vidunas proposes to construct a connector road from the western terminus of Atlee Road to Atlee Station Road. The new road would also have a turn lane to the north that connects to Cool Springs Road. The proposed road would be elevated to pass over the existing CSX Railroad track. Construction would see impacts of 0.48 acre of forested wetland, 286 linear feet of stream channel and temporary impacts to 20 linear feet of stream.

    Norfolk District has prepared a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment on behalf of the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), Joint Base Langley-Eustis, to assess the potential impacts of maintenance dredging the Skiffes Creek Channel, a tributary of the James River. Comment period ends on May 30, 2014.
