The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to hold a public meeting September 5, 2018 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 8060 Harbour View Boulevard, Suffolk, VA. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the proposed plan for the James River Beachfront site at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) Formerly Used Defense Site.
The Corps of Engineers’ restoration efforts are focused on the James River Beachfront site on FNOD where the U.S. Army conducted operations between 1917 and 1950. The decision is No Further Action for the James River Beachfront site because unacceptable risk was not associated with former Department of Defense activities at the site. The Proposed Plan summarizes the preferred remedy and rationale for remedy selection. The plan also presents information concerning past activities and investigations that have been conducted at each site. All munitions related risks and issues are to be included in the investigation of Project 16 (Shoreline MEC Areas Munitions Response Site) which is a site that encompasses the James River Beachfront site.
The Corps of Engineers is responsible for environmental investigations and cleanup activities of these sites under the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 are supporting agencies in the decision making process.
Your comments on the proposed plan are welcome. In addition to oral public comments at the September 5 meeting, there will be a public comment period August 25 – September 25, 2018. Please mail (postmarked no later than September 25, 2018) or e-mail your comments to Sher Zaman, Project Manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, 2 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore, MD 21201; email: sher.zaman@usace.army.mil.
