Lafayette River Reefs
Keith Lockwood (left), chief, Norfolk District Technical Support Section and supervisory environmental scientist, shows the reef locations to environmental reporter Aaron Applegate of The Virginian-Pilot. The reefs at Hoffler Creek and Gilligan Creek have been completed. After the Norfolk International Terminal reef location is completed, there are two remaining reefs to be constructed, one in the western branch of the Elizabeth River at Baines Creek, and one in the southern branch of the river at Blows Creek. Six million spat-on-shell oysters will be seeded on six oyster reefs this spring. The project will be completed in June 2014. All of the reefs will be permanent oyster sanctuaries.
