Lt Col. Alexander Samms

Lt. Col. Alexander Samms is the Norfolk District deputy commander and deputy district engineer.

Samms graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2003. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. 

Samms’ previous assignments include Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer, 173rd Combat Support Company, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy;  Deputy Director of Public Works, ARCENT HQ (FWD), Doha, Qatar; Company Commander, Alpha Company, Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC; Engineer Organizational Integrator, FORSCOM HQ, Fort Bragg, NC; Division Engineer Operations Officer, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, TX; Assistant Brigade Engineer, Operations Officer, and Executive Officer, 91st Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, TX.

His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic Course, Engineer Captain’s Career Course, Airborne, Jumpmaster, Sapper Course, Ranger Course, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. 

Samms’ awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and other awards and decorations. He has earned the Ranger Tab, Sapper Tab, Combat Action Badge, and Parachutist Badge. He is a recipient of the Bronze Order of the DeFluery Medal.
