Gathright Dam Safety Response to DSAC Rating

In response the DSAC II rating, the Norfolk District and the Gathright Dam staff developed a action plan that includes immediate, short term, and 2010 initiatives to minimize public risk and investigate if the DSAC II rating is appropriate and what, if any, additional actions are warranted based on the findings. Those safety initiatives include:

Immediate Risk Reduction

  • Maintain current pool decline of 1 foot per week.
  • Increased staff inspections to three times a day
  • Gather downstream toe piezometer readings daily
  • Update the Gathright Dam safety plan
  • Staff Dam 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Short-Term (within 90 days) Risk Reduction

  • Prepare Interim Risk Reduction Measures Plan
  • Increase remote electronic monitoring
  • District data compilation, analyses & results

2010 Initiatives

  • Update inundation mapping
  • Conduct a dam safety exercise w/local and state officials
  • Conduct series of investigations and analyses

    • Geophysical investigations
    • Drilling and sampling
    • Exploratory survey via electrical power contrast
    • Flow path mapping
    • Dye studies
    • River spring flow rate measurement
    • Side scan sonar
