Radford Army Ammunition Plant, VA
Project Manager:
Bryant Wilkins
This $4.7 million dollar project consists of constructing a modified-standard, two-company fire station and security station with drive-through structural apparatus bays, consolidated fire and intrusion detection alarm control center, arms room, emergency medical service room, offices and administrative areas, training/shift assembly room, dormitory rooms, men's and women's lockers, showers, and toilets, kitchen with dining area, break room, mechanical rooms, fire alarm and suppression systems, storage, uninterruptible power supply, standby generator, access road with traffic signal, apparatus and equipment apron, and information systems. Install intrusion detection system (IDS). Supporting facilities include electrical service, street lighting, water and wastewater connections, steam lines, paving, walks, curbs and gutters, storm drainage, signage, and site
improvements. Heating will be steam from central plant and air conditioning will be provided by self-contained system. Access for the handicapped will be provided. Anti-terrorism/force protection measures include laminated- glass windows in reinforced frames, reinforced exterior doors, barriers, and visual screening.
Supporting facilities costs are high due to demolition, asbestos removal, relocation of large storm drainage lines, excavation & soil disposal, paving and utility extension and connection costs. This project is required to protect life and property in the administrative, industrial, family housing areas of Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP). It will eliminate existing life, health, safety (LHS) deficiencies by providing a consolidated fire station/emergency services center at a location outside the production area and distant from the anhydrous ammonia and nitric and sulfuric acid storage tanks and processing facilities. It is required to improve response time to Building 220, the major RFAAP administrative facility with over 200 occupants and the family housing area.
