    Changes to the Virginia Dam Safety Regulations resulted in the Lee Hall Reservoir’s Lower Dam and CSX Causeway being classified as “regulated structures. Engineers determined that both dam structures are non-conforming and undersized to perform under this regulation. Additionally, both structures are classified as high-hazard potential structures. Therefore, the purpose and need of this project is to engineer, design, and construct modifications to insure public safety and bring the entire system into compliance with the Virginia Dam Safety Regulations. Public comment period ends June 3, 2013.

    The Norfolk District Corps of Engineers has established a temporary Danger Zone for the period of April 17th through April 22nd, 2013, around the NASA Wallops Flight Center in Accomack, Va., for the NASA Orbital's resupply to space station launch.

  • Wetland Hydrology Determinations for the 2013 Monitoring Season

    On March 13, 2013, Regulatory released a public notice regarding preceding precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations. Based on analysis of several rainfall recording stations and reference groundwater monitoring wells within the Hampton Roads region, the Norfolk District has determined that antecedent precipitation conditions for shallow groundwater well monitoring associated with wetland determinations has been within or above normal ranges.

    The applicant proposes to construct five variable length stone breakwaters, six variable length stone sills, a stone spur, and a 352 linear foot stone revetment to provide long-term stabilization along an eroding shoreline. Approximately 15000 cubic yards of beach quality sand will be utilized as beach nourishment landward of the breakwaters and sills. Intertidal zones will be planted with Spartina alterniflora while backshore areas will be planted with Spartina patens. No impacts to vegetated wetlands are associated with the shoreline work. The project is located along the north shore of the Rappahannock River in Richmond County, Va.

    The project site is approximately 150 acres and is located south of Otterdale Branch, generally west of Otterdale Road, in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The site drains into Otterdale Branch, which drains into Swift Creek, a tributary to the Appomattox River. The stated purpose of the project is to complete construction of a single family residential development known as Summerlake. Public comments should be received by the close of business on Sept. 19, 2012.
