NORFOLK – The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake, Va., at approximately 7:30 a.m., today due to an inoperative valve.

The district is reviewing a dive plan to repair the valve, and Corps contract divers will inspect the valve at noon.

No vessels are currently waiting to pass through the lock.

Mariners traveling along the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal can monitor marine radio channel 13 for updates, or follow the Norfolk District social media pages at www.twitter.com/norfolkdistrict or www.facebook.com/NAOonFB for more details once the divers complete their inspection.

The locks remain open along the Dismal Swamp Canal for boats that draft less than six feet.
