    In an effort to increase efficiency and reduce duplication, the Norfolk District has implemented a new policy regarding the submittal of new project requests.

    Mr. Kenneth Douglas Wilkins is proposing the removal and reconstruction of an existing pier and twelve commercial mooring slips to be used by the existing eco-tourism and rental operation; the proposed construction of sixty-four new members-only slips with associated piers; construction of a boat ramp; installation of a non-backfilled bulkhead; as well as maintenance and new dredging at property located at 3701 South Sandpiper Road in the Sandbridge community of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
  • Corps completes maintenance at Deep Creek Bridge ahead of schedule

    Maintenance repairs to saw cut and patch deteriorated concrete portions of the Deep Creek Bridge’s approach road were completed ahead of schedule Oct. 6.

    Dominion Terminals Associates proposes to deepen the berthing and approach to their facilities from -52.6 ft MLW to -57 ft MLW, to provide access and berthing for larger coal and bulk material handling vessels. The public comment period ends Oct. 19, 2014. The current dredge footprint of 26.5 acres of subaqueous, unconsolidated bottom will be maintained, with a proposed removal of an additional 166,750 cubic yards of material, with planned disposal at Craney Island Dredge Material Management Area or Craney Island Rehandling Basin (dependant on dredging method). All work will take place at 600 Harbor Road - pier 11, in Newport News, Virginia.

    Corps schedules maintenance at Deep Creek Bridge, Sept. 28 to Oct. 9

    The Deep Creek Bridge will undergo scheduled maintenance repairs to the span’s concrete approach between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning Sept. 28, through the morning of Oct. 9, weather permitting.

    The City of Chesapeake is proposing improvements to 1.9 miles of Route 337 (Portsmouth Boulevard in Chesapeake and Nansemond Boulevard in Suffolk) between I-664 interchange in Chesapeake and Helen St. in Suffolk, Virginia. The improvements include widening the road from two lanes to four lanes, adding sidewalks, constructing a multi-use path, etc. Construction of the improvements will result in the permanent impact 1.07 acres of nontidal wetland and open water ditch, and 481 linear feet of stream. The public comment period ends on October 26, 2014.

    Norfolk District will conduct aerial mosquito spraying Friday, Sept. 26, over U.S. Army property at the Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area in Portsmouth, Va.
  • VDOT, FHWA, USACE sign, release draft SEIS for Route 460 project

    VDOT, FHWA and USACE signed the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project Sept. 18 and released it for public comment.
  • Craney Island mosquito spraying set for Sept. 23

    Norfolk District and the city of Portsmouth will conduct joint aerial mosquito spraying Tuesday at federal properties on Craney Island, adjacent city properties and the Churchland area in Portsmouth, Va.
  • Cemetery’s Welcome Center renovations set to start later this month

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, awarded Polu Kai Services, LLC -- a native Hawaiian owned, small disadvantaged business, service-disabled veteran owned business -- with a $4.3 million contract on August 25 to make upgrades to the facility, including its basement space visitor bathrooms, and the electrical, water and fire protection systems.

    Loudoun Industrial Land Investment LLC proposes to construct Evergreen Commerce Center, a commercial lot complex and associated infrastructure, on the west side of Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County, Virginia. Public comments are due by Oct. 20, 2014.

    September 17, 2014: The City of Norfolk submitted a permit application for improvements to the existing Western Branch Reservoir Dam. The purpose of the project is to provide reliable water supply storage for Norfolk and other communities; prevent a hazard to downstream residents, structures, roadways, or environment from potential failure of a High Hazard dam; comply with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) dam safety regulations; and comply with the City of Norfolk’s operating permit. Wetland and water impacts for the entire project total 2.629 acres, which include impacts to non-tidal subaqueous land, non-tidal forested wetlands, tidal subaqueous lands, tidal wetlands and intertidal areas. Public comment period ends October 17, 2014.

    Second Generation, LLC, proposes to construct Downs Park, a warehouse complex and associated infrastructure, on the north side of Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County, Virginia. Public comments are due by Oct. 20, 2014.
  • Fourth Gathright Dam pulse release scheduled for tomorrow

    The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a pulse release beginning at 6 a.m. tomorrow at Gathright Dam.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Norfolk District has prepared a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment (SEA) to supplement the 1975 and 1987 Environmental Assessments (EA) for restoring navigation to the Cape Charles City Harbor Federal Navigation Project.
