NORFOLK, Va.—The Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, wants to hear from the public concerning a June 2009 supplement to previously published information on the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project.

The Corp originally published a Final Environmental Impact Statement, or FEIS, in 2006, concerning the proposed 580-acre expansion and development of a container terminal, and the assistant secretary of the Army issued a record of decision in 2007.

The most recent document, known as an Environmental Assessment Supplement, addresses information that was not known and could not be known when officials finalized the original EIS, said Craig Seltzer, Ecosystem Biologist.

New information available includes:

  • A Hydrodynamic/water quality study conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in 2007-2008
  • A geotechnical evaluation for sand borrow activities
  • Dredged material evaluations for placement in Norfolk Ocean Disposal Site
  • A dredged material management plan
  • Minor additional wetlands impacts
  • A Coastal Zone Management Act consistency determination
  • Mitigation plan implementation effects
  • Historical and cultural resources investigations

An electronic version of the Environmental Assessment Supplement with all appendices is available online at www.craneyisland.info/EASupplement.html

The Norfolk District accepts public comments until July 27, 2009. Address comments to

Craig Seltzer (Re: Craney Island Environmental Assessment) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, 803 Front Street, Norfolk, VA 23510.
