Norfolk District Public Affairs
FORT NORFOLK , Va. – The Norfolk District's civil mission in Virginia provides the Commonwealth with flood control, beach nourishment, environmental restoration and other civil works management. In addition to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, our civil works boundaries include five major river basins - the Rappahannock, York, James and Chowan - the Virginia portion of the Eastern Shore, and the Dismal Swamp Canal in North Carolina to the mouth of the Pasquatank River.
Within those borders the Norfolk District's scope of operations range from hurricane protection programs, floodwalls, dams, removal of hazards in federal channels, bridges, dredging, environmental restoration and many more civil works projects.
These projects have directly saved the surrounding localities and the Commonwealth of Virginia millions of dollars during storm events, such as the Richmond Floodwall and the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Program.
Other projects have enhanced the quality of life for residents, such as the Great Bridge Bridge, and environmental restoration of the Lynnhaven and Elizabeth Rivers.
The Norfolk District continues to study and work on projects which will protect the Commonwealth of Virginia from future disasters, as well as improve the quality of life of residents for generations to come.
